San Antonio ranks No. 7 in the nation for solar electricity and No. 1 in Texas, according to a report by a national environmental group released Wednesday.
“Thanks to forward-thinking programs and leadership by CPS Energy, our report shows that San Antonio really shines when it comes to solar power,” said Luke Metzger, director of Environment Texas, Environment America’s branch in the state.
Metzger said cities are part of a push for renewable energy needed to reduce global warming caused by greenhouse gas emissions. Burning fossil fuels for electricity produces more greenhouse gases than any other source in the U.S., according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
While Texas is suing the federal government to challenge its carbon standards for power plants, CPS is increasing its solar capacity and expects to get 20 percent of its power from renewable sources by 2020.
“Cities are really at the foreground of the solar energy movement,” Metzger said.
